Fellas, as a follow up to my November 22 email I wanted to fill in the blanks on some of your questions concerning the 2013 season. I have been out of town for a large portion of the last four months with some heavy personal issues and have been spending very little time focusing on any kind of football.
With several of these issues due to continue into mid December their is simply no time for me to do much work on any new projects. It looks now that after the first of the year I will be freed up for football once again and will have completed my personal and business obligations out of town.
As a result of these issues I have spoken to coach Fisher at length about the 2013 Viking season and decided to remain with the Sno-Vikings in the capacity of Offensive Ccoordinator and Asst. Head Coach. That season begins today guys!
The balance of the coaching staff is still TBD. Remember getting ready for the upcoming season is up to you and not your coaches whoever they end up being. Those who have played for me before know what I will be expecting from my players. I prefere to hit the ground running when we begin in February.
Remember my number one thing in football. Attendance. Nothing can proceed without it!!
I have been contacted by many new and former players about the 2013 season. Their first question has been where I will be coaching in 2013 followed by questions about the Vikings change of leagues from the PFL to the WFA.
Last August I went to the PFL meeting down in Portland with Wes and Deb and I can understand coach Fishers reasons for making the league switch. All in all the travel time averages out over the season to what our travel in the PFL would have been and Im anticipating the competition level will be as good or better. I have seen some of these boys play in the past and they do get after it.
My intention is to build a competitive football team from scratch this season with all positions "open to whoever can make it happen" at practices, at games and in the ($) pocket book. Being competitive guys is the first step to building a winning team and a winning 2013 season.
I do believe we have a strong core of veteran players who can be crafted into a true football competitor. I also believe that many of our players have the playing experience and leadership skills to make things happen on the field this season. The basics of blocking and tackling is where we will begin once we get into a regular practice rhythm. Ball handling skills and throwing consistancy will come along in there own time.
I have asked Mike Astley to join the team as a punter and kicker and he has agreed. He will also help with the field coordination at practices and games for special teams. Mike has been around for a long time and still kicks the ball long and consistently.
Money.......We all know there are player fees coming next year so if you start now putting a little away each week you have 10 weeks from today to mitigate this seasons financial requirements. Gone are the days of "coach my wife is pregnant with twins for the 207th time in just two years" or "coach my car needs new breaks and a radiator" and you drive a friggin air cooled motorcycle. BS is not a good way to start a new season so lets keep it to a minimum. No more two-a-days on crap MAN fields because some players are dragging their feet on paying their fees on time.
The history of the 2013 season will "be or not be" what all of us make it together. The beginning is the beginning and thats where the Vikings 2013 season needs to start and not half way through it when some of you feel maybe its time to get off your asses and get serious about playing and paying.
Guys I have been anticipating the the start of this season and I believe it could be the best ever, however I need all of you on board to make this anticipation a reality.
Also check out the Vikings web site for further updates from Head Coach Fisher or my self.
Can I count on you? Let me know.........
