Many of you who have been at practice lately know me as Coach Putty. I'm the sorry looking dude that always seems to have some Duck crap on. I just wanted to make sure that you all get to know a little about me, since it looks like I'm on board to help the T-Bolts this year in any way I can.
My real name is Mike Putnam. I'm 37, a Salem native (Sprague 1990), and this marks my 17th year coaching football. Spent about half of my career coaching in Oregon high schools like Stayton, South Albany, and most recently McKay. For 7 years I had the privilege of coaching at Western Oregon University, as well as one year at Willamette. To finish my bio, I have a wife Nikki and two daughters (Katie 7 and Suzy 4). We all currently live in Stayton.
My coaching approach, especially this year, will be to lend whatever ideas I can. I also look forward to learning from you all. I haven't coached athletes who are pros and essentially grown men before, and I'm excited for the challenge. So aside from giving instruction and advice, please be prepared for me to ask you questions and seek your opinions as well. The more I learn, the better I will be in helping you all succeed.
A couple of final bits of information about me- I'm a firm believer in honest communication and I won't play head games with anybody. I won't b.s. people. If I don't know the answer-I'll tell you so, but I'll also go find out what the answer is later. Finally, I refuse to coach in a style that sucks the fun out of this game. I have worked with coaches before who always seem to insist that football be a grind. I won't ever do it again. I owe too much to this game of football, the greatest team game ever invented, to treat it as a chore. And since nothing in this great game is more fun than winning, I will work my tail off to give the T-Bolts the best chance of that every Saturday.
I want to thank everyone who gave me this privilege to work with you all, in particular Coach Swain. Look forward to seeing you all at Wednesday's practice.
