TUMWATER - The Washington Cavaliers finally had the breaks go their way Saturday night, beating the Willamette Valley Raiders 21-0 in a Northwest Football League contest at Tumwater Distrct Stadium.
The Cavaliers entered the game 0-4 on the season, but put together their four best quarters of football in administering the whitewahing to a good Raiders team. Washington used a ground game featuring the inside pounding of Roger Prince and the outside speed of Michael Lyman to work their way downfield for the first score the game, a one-yard plunge by quarterback Steve Arnett. After Joe Richmond's extra point kick was blocked at the line, the Cavs took their 6-0 lead into the locker room at halftime as neither team was able to break through for a score the rest of the first half.
The Cavaliers drove downfield again late in the third quarter as Prince capped the effort with a one-yard run up the Raiders' middle for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth. A two-point somersault by Arnett on the PAT put Washington up 14-0. The backbreaker was an interception at midfield and a zig-zagging runback of 55 yards by Washington defensive back Herm Benson for the final score of the contest.
The Cavs defense was outstanding, turning in five interceptions (two by Centralia product Miles Snead), and continually pressured the Willamette Valley quarterbacks into hurried passes into double coverage numerous times.
The Cavs are now 1-4, while the Raiders drop to 2-3 in the NWFL South. Next Saturday, Washington travels to Ingraham Stadium in Seattle to face the Stallions. The Cavaliers' next home game won't be until August 2 against the Pierce County Bengals at South Sound Stadium in Lacey.
