CAVS FALL A YARD SHORT, LOSE TO SNOHOMISH COUNTY, 6-3
TUMWATER - The Washington Cavaliers found themselves with a first-and-goal situation on Snohomish County’s one-yard line late in the final quarter. However, they were unable to convert and ended up on the short end of a 6-3 score against the Snohomish County Vikings Saturday night at Tumwater District Stadium. The loss dropped the Cavs to 0-2 on the Northwest Football League season, while the Vikings evened their record at 1-1.
The game was a defensive struggle all the way, as both teams went to their respective locker rooms tied 0-0 at halftime. The Cavaliers finally broke the ice with 22 seconds left in the third quarter on a 25-yard Steve Arnett field goal to go up 3-0. Snohomish County came up with the play of the game halfway through the final stanza when running back Jamir Brown scooted outside to the right before quickly cutting upfield for a 60-yard touchdown romp, outdistancing Washington defensive back Jake Early, a Tumwater High alum.
The Cavs had a golden opportunity late in the game when defensive back Herm Benson, a soldier stationed at Fort Lewis, stripped a Vikings running back of the ball on Snohomish County’s 33-yard line. Centralia product Iyan Guerrero took a handoff on the first play from scrimmage and zig-zagged his way 22 yards downfield before being forced out of bounds at the one-yard line. Washington was unable to capitalize, being driven back to the Vikings’ 10-yard line on penalties and lost yardage runs before setting Arnett up for a 20-yard field goal attempt on fourth-and-goal with one minute left on the clock. Arnett’s kick was blocked at the line of scrimmage, and Snohomish County quarterback Hal Bisnett took a knee on consecutive snaps to kill the clock and preserve the win for the Vikings.
