Sloppy Saints Handed Second Loss By Nathan Joyce, njoyce@kitsapsun.com July 30, 2006
All season long, the West Sound Saints have started about as well as a 1957 Chevy on a cold morning.
But once they got going, and warmed up, things went fine.
So, Saturday night everybody was waiting for the Saints to get going.
They never did.
The Saints (4-2) lost to the Snohomish County Vikings 10-7 in a Northwest Football League game at Silverdale Stadium.
Larry Moody, who spent parts of the last two seasons with the Saints, hit a 30-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining to give the Vikings (3-2) the upset.
The Saints never got going offensively. They were whistled for 13 penalties totaling 115 yards. They had less than 200 yards of offense.
Despite the paltry showing, new head coach John Corey, in his just second game in charge, said he really had no problem with the offense. He said Malachi DeWalt ran hard, gaining 49 yards on 12 carries.
"I just felt our defense could play better than that," said Corey, the former defensive coordinator.
The Saints’ only scoring came from their special teams, not their offense.
The Vikings sputtered on the game’s first drive, and dropped back to punt.
Moody fumbled under a heavy rush. Jackie Triplett scooped it up at the 12-yard line and ran it in.
And that was all the scoring until the fourth quarter.
Both teams had chances. A Vikings drive deep into Saints’ territory in the first quarter stalled and Snohomish lined up for a 23-yard field goal attempt. But Eddie Llamas, the Saints’ all-time leader in block kicks, stormed up the middle and blocked Moody’s attempt.
It was a rough day for Moody until he redeemed himself in the final seconds. He missed two field goals (41 and 50 yards) and had a punt blocked by his own player when he kicked it into his blocking back’s face mask.
The Saints’ offense’s best effort came in the second quarter, when West Sound drove to the Vikings’ 15-yard line. They lined up for a field goal and attempted a fake, but the pass fell incomplete in the end zone. West Sound also failed on a fake punt attempt in the fourth quarter.
The second half was a mess of missed plays and penalties.
Snohomish finally put a drive together in the fourth quarter. The combination of quarterback Daiminio Stewart and receiver Davie Beeks was the only thing working for the Vikings. Together, they drove the ball down to the 5-yard-line.
Stewart hit Beeks from five yards out and tied the game 7-7 with 4:37 remaining.
Stewart passed for 119 yards on 16 of 23 passing. He also rushed for 51 yards. Beeks caught 11 passes for 99 yards.
The Saints started moving the ball on the ensuing drive. Marvin Bronson hit Justin Kelly over the middle, but it was stripped at midfield. The Vikings’ Brian Carter picked it up and returned 30 yards to the Saints’ 30 with under two minutes left in the game, setting up Moody’s kick.
After the game, the Saints retired the No. 21 jersey of James Kelly. Kelly, a defensive back, wii transfer to Virginia to work in the Pentagon at the Naval Intelligence Center. This is the fourth season Kelly has been with the team, and he was part of the Saints’ national title run last year.
The Saints have a bye next week, and are at the Renton Ravens in two weeks.
Snohomish Co. 10, West Sound 7
WS — Jackie Triplett 12 fumble return (Nick Obrastoff kick)
SC — Davie Beeks 5 pass from Daiminio Stewart (Larry Moody kick)
SC — Moody 30 FG

I think he didn't count the extra 9 yds from where you actually kick the ball. But don't blame me, that's on the reporter. He takes stats too. But I do remember the 50yd attempt...because I told myself if you made it I was going to run out and tackle the sh*t out of you for making it now when you couldn't make it last year. hehehehe

Rollis,
I think I made a hell of an effort I didn't have my long snapper. My longest in this league is 52 so I know I could hit it a miss is a miss but I still had about 3-4 yards to spare just missed about 5 inches 2 the left. As for you hitting me you guys were doing that all night and I am paying for it today hehehe back!!

I can't take all the credit because my OL and long snapper Owen Smith came Thur he haven't snapped a ball in 2 seasons or longer. The coaching staff also made a right call at the right time.
