DAYTON, Ohio - The Rapid City Flying Aces got out-gained 207-157 in total offense Sunday night but still managed to post a convincing 66-38 win over the Dayton Bulldogs in their first road game of the season in National Indoor Football League Week 7 action.
The score was knotted at 6-all after a quarter as Rapid City's James Jones had a rushing touchdown before Dayton's Jeff Morningstar kicked a pair of field goals. However, the Flying Aces outscored the Bulldogs 34-8 over the next two periods to take a 40-14 lead with a quarter to play.
In the second, quarterback Albert Higgs found James Owens for a 10-yard touchdown pass midway through to make it 14-6.
With 1:55 to go, Higgs hooked up with J.R. Wells on a 40-yard score and Edwin Reed added the two-point conversion as Rapid City went up 22-6.
With time about to expire in the first half, Corey Roberson intercepted Dayton quarterback Antonio Davis deep in Rapid City's territory and took the ball the length of the field for a 50-yard TD, tying the
NIFL record for longest interception return.
Rapid City took a 26-6 lead into intermission.
Jones came out of the locker room in a hurry and caught a pass from Higgs before taking it into the endzone for a 21-yard TD. Jones' two-point run made it a 34-6 ballgame just 45 seconds into the third.
About five minutes later, Higgs found Dante Dudley for a two-yard TD strike to give Rapid City its biggest lead of the night at 40-6.
Davis ran one in from eight-yards out with 1:32 left in the third, and Dontai Horton added the two-pointer as Dayton trailed 40-14 with 15 minutes to go.
Jones scored another TD early in the fourth period and the two teams exchanged touchdowns the rest of the way as Rapid City hung on to win.
Higgs ended up 12-for-23 for 153 and five TDs, giving him a league-high 35 for the season.
Jones' three TDs upped his season mark to 17. Roberson, who added a game-high 10 tackles, leads the NIFL in interceptions with eight and interception touchdowns with four.
Brandon Everage also had a solid performance for the Aces, coming up with 6-1/2 tackles and a pair of interceptions.
Rapid City (6-0) has a bye week this week.
