The Oregon Monarchs announce the appointment of Aaron Fentress to the position of head coach, replacing Gary Joyce who has taken a job with a team in Oklahoma.
Fentress takes over the Monarchs after having spent five seasons as an offensive coordinator in the Northwest Football League. There, his on field winning percentage was .714 (30-12) with the Willamette Valley Raiders, Oregon Thunderbolts and Columbia Cougars.
Fentress, who played wide receiver at Grant High School (1984-85), Portland State (‘86-88) and Pacific University (‘89-90), said he’s excited to take on his first head coaching job and looks forward to helping the Monarchs take the final steps towards becoming OFL champions.
"With the expected returning talent and the list of players believed to be joining our team, we should be able to improve on last season’s 7-4 record," Fentress said. "The challenge will be getting everybody on the same page within a new system."
Fentress plans to employ a multiple-formation offense laced with West Coast principles. He emphasis a balanced attack flexible enough to take advantage of his team’s strengths as well as an opponent’s weaknesses.
Defensively, Fentress, who said he’s in the process of naming a defensive coordinator, would like to see this unit emphasize aggression but with the proper amount of conservative discipline.
"I would like to dictate tempo on defense but only if the unit is disciplined enough to maintain basic responsibilities to avoid giving up unnecessary big plays," he said. "We’ll just have to see what type of personnel we have."
The most appealing aspect of the job, Fentress said, is that he does not have to start from scratch or rebuild a team, things he’s done three times before.
"This is a team that last year scored 24.1 points per game and allowed just 14.4," Fentress said. "Most of the heavy lifting already has been done. It’s up to me to help put the finishing touches on what I see as a potential championship product."
The Monarchs will play Linfield in October, following three team workouts in September. Specific dates have yet to be determined.
